Cal Grant Program:  Funding Education In The Golden State

This year, the United states Federal Government will give $534.6 billion dollars in Federal grant money to State and Local Governments! Most of these state grants and federal grants may be available to you!

Students who need financial assistance in the Golden State can check out the Cal Grant Program for educational funding opportunities.  Unlike student loans, students do not have to repay these grants.  The State of California allocates funding for these grants in their budget with a little help from the Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership (LEAP) Program from the federal government.  To qualify for these grants, a student has to meet financial need and academic performance requirements.  More information about these grants are available through your school’s financial assistance office or through the program’s official website.

There are several types of grants that a California student can qualify for.  The first one is an entitlement award wherein a student has to have a GPA of at least 3.0.  This grant gives funding for tuition and fees for studies at the University of California, the California State University, as well as other participating non-public colleges in the state.

A student who does not qualify for this entitlement grant could take a stab at the competitive award.  This type of grant is awarded on a limited basis.  There are about 11,250 of these competitive grants that are up for grabs for those who meet the requirements and document submission deadlines.  There are the same number of grants that are available for those who wish to go to a community college first before moving on to a four-year college course.  Grants for these community college students are held on reserve for up to three years.

You can apply for your Cal Grant through the California Student Aid Commission.  Simply fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form and submit it online.  You should also secure a GPA Verification Form from the commission to form part of your application.  There are some schools that automatically mails in their students’ GPAs to the commission.  If your school has already done so in your behalf, you do not have to submit your GPA Verification Form.  You can either do your submissions online or through post office mail.  There are deadlines that you have to be mindful of.  Make sure you do not miss the dates as the grant slots are limited.
