Pay Your Way Through College With Tax Credits

This year, the United states Federal Government will give $534.6 billion dollars in Federal grant money to State and Local Governments! Most of these state grants and federal grants may be available to you!

There are various ways to cover the rising costs of college education.  You can get grants or scholarships.  Or you can get federal student loans or private student loans.  And then there are tax credits that you can take advantage of to divert tax payments towards funding for education.  There are limits to the amount of credits that you are allowed to use for educational spending.

You can get more information about these credits and the specific requirements that you have to meet to qualify for these credits in various online sources.  There are basically two types of credits that you can qualify for:  the Lifetime Learning Credit facility and the Hope Credit.  You can choose to avail of only one of these two credit facilities.  Note also that educational expenses you spend your credits on would not qualify as tax deductible expenses.

The Lifetime Learning Credit facility allows for as much as $2,000 in credits every year.  There are no limits as to the number of years that you have to be in school and use your credits with this facility.  You only have to make sure that the expenses that you use your credits on are only qualified educational expenses for eligible educational institutions.  The primary consideration for qualifying to this tax credit facility is family income.  The family member who is paying for the tuition and other educational expenses would have to be the one to have the Lifetime Learning Credit deducted from his federal income tax.

The Hope Credit facility, on the other hand, allows for as much as $2,500 per student.  Students pursuing four-year degrees are eligible for this tax credit facility.  Unlike the Lifetime Learning Credit facility, the Hope Credit facility or currently known as the American Opportunity Credit looks at individual income as basis for qualifying students for the tax credit facility.  A student would have to have an annual income of $80,000 or less in order to be eligible for this facility.

Married students pursuing a degree should have $160,000 combined income at most to be able to take advantage of this tax credit for educational expenses.  Students with incomes beyond these maximum levels are not eligible to have these tax credits deducted from their annual federal income taxes.
